One of the most consequential and highly anticipated moves of the NFL offseason has finally come to fruition. The Philadelphia Eagles on June 1 agreed to trade three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and 2027 fifth-round pick, both teams announced. The move had long been expected to materialize at some point after the end of business on June 1, at which point the the $43.45 million dead cap hit for moving Brown could be spread out over two seasons rather than forced to be absorbed entirely in 2026.Now, two of the NFL's leading Super Bowl contenders have radically transformed their offensive outlook for the short term.Brown, who turns 29 in June, reunites with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, under whom the receiver began his career with the Tennessee Titans. In Philadelphia, Brown extended for being one of the NFL's most difficult matchups - and one the league's most mercurial young stars. He helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl twice during his four-year run, with the franchise claiming its second title in the 2024 season. But Brown also frequently aired out his frustrations with the team's offense. His dissatisfaction seemed to reach a boiling point last November, when he remarked that things had been a "(expletive) show. He finished the year with 1,003 receiving yards - his lowest single-season output for the organization - as Philadelphia floundered and saw its Super Bowl title defense cut short in a wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers.That led to months of general manager Howie Roseman trying to sidestep questions of a potential trade. After initially saying in January that it's "hard to find great players in the NFL, and A.J. is a great player," Roseman reverted to the same line whenever asked about a potential trade: "A.J. Brown's an Eagle."Now, he isn't anymore. What A.J. Brown trade means for PatriotsIn February 2024, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf spoke of the organization's need to "weaponize the offense" as it transitioned from the Bill Belichick era.In landing Brown, Wolf might have finally achieved his goal.New England ranked second in the NFL in scoring last year, thanks in large part to second-year quarterback Drake Maye helping prop up an underdeveloped receiving corps. Without a true go-to target, however, sacks remained the biggest problem for the NFL MVP runner-up, who took an NFL record 21 throughout the playoffs. Maye was pummeled for six in the Patriots' Super Bowl dismantling at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. With Brown on board, Maye will finally be afforded a premier weapon in his third season. New England signed Romeo Doubs to a four-year deal in March, but his arrival didn't seem to transform a receiving corps that also lost its most productive contributor from a year ago in Stefon Diggs, who was released after one season. Adding Brown, however, might make a drastic difference.Long known as one of the NFL's most challenging receivers for opponents to handle in man coverage, Brown could be a boon on both quick hits and in the deep passing game, with Maye already excelling in the latter area. The Patriots' acquisition of Brown became so widely expected that Patriots players freely discussed the potential move in organized team activities in May.“Great dude,” Patriots defensive tackle Milton Williams said of Brown, whom he played with for three seasons in Philadelphia before leaving for New England last offseason. “Monster on the field. Great in the locker room, holding guys accountable and holding himself accountable.“You see the noise. He’s a hell of a player. He can definitely help our team. But they don’t pay me to do that.”What A.J. Brown trade means for EaglesThough Eagles leadership hid its intentions for Brown when asked in interviews, the last three months of moves pointed toward a team at least preparing for the possibility of moving on from its star target.Philadelphia seemed to at the very least begin implementing a contingency plan when Roseman swung a trade with the Green Bay Packers for receiver Dontayvion Wicks, though the general manager in April refused to clarify the motivation for the deal. The Eagles continued to pave a new course for their passing attack by moving up to take USC's Makai Lemon at No. 20 overall in the first round of April's NFL draft. Both look likely to serve complementary roles next to DeVonta Smith, who is poised to become the focal point of the aerial attack after posting a nearly identical output (77 catches, 1,008 receiving yards) as Brown last season.Brown's exit is the latest departure for an offense in transition. Coordinator Kevin Patullo was fired after one season in the role and replaced by Sean Mannion, a first-time play-caller who could have quarterback Jalen Hurts under center more often than he has been accustomed."I'm a big fan of A.J. Brown. One of my really good friends, one of my favorite teammates I've ever been around," running back Saquon Barkley said at a May 27 OTA session. "Just respect him as a man. But this is a business. It's the NFL. If I'm not here, Jalen's not here, whoever's not here, the show goes on."A.J. Brown contractBrown is signed through 2029, but the final two years of his deal contain no guaranteed salary. He is set to carry just $29 million in guaranteed salary for 2026 and just $4 million in guaranteed salary for 2027.Upon signing a three-year, $96 million extension in April 2024, Brown briefly held the title of the NFL's highest-paid receiver. He now ranks seventh at the position in contractual average annual value, having been leapfrogged by several peers who capitalized on a rapidly escalating market in the last two years.A.J.
