US president says 'troops headed for Beirut were turned back,' while Axios reports Hezbollah signaled readiness for a full ceasefire with Israelynet|Updated:President Donald Trump said Monday on Truth Social that Hezbollah had agreed to stop all shooting after what he described as a “very good call” conducted through senior representatives, while also saying he held a “very productive” call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The comments came after an Israeli official said Israel had postponed its planned strike in Beirut’s Dahieh district at Washington’s request, following earlier Israeli threats to target Hezbollah sites there if rocket fire on northern Israel continued.According to Axios, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri told the Trump administration Sunday that Hezbollah was ready for a full and immediate ceasefire with Israel and that he would guarantee its implementation.Berri’s senior adviser, Ali Hamdan, said the message was delivered to U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa. An Israeli official confirmed to Axios that Hezbollah had expressed readiness for a full ceasefire without demanding an immediate Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon. The Trump administration had initially proposed a narrower arrangement, under which Hezbollah would stop attacks on northern Israel and Israel would refrain from striking Beirut. Hamdan said Berri pushed instead for a full ceasefire on land, at sea and in the air.The United States has urged Israel for weeks to avoid striking Beirut as part of efforts to prevent a wider escalation. But a U.S. official told Axios on Sunday that Washington does not expect Israel to absorb continued attacks on civilians by a terrorist organization.2 View gallery (Photo: IDF, REUTERS/Amir Cohen, REUTERS/Jessica Koscielniak)On Monday, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to strike Hezbollah targets in Dahieh “following repeated violations of the ceasefire” by the Shiite group. They said Hezbollah’s “terrorist headquarters” in Beirut could no longer “remain off-limits.”The IDF later issued an Arabic-language warning urging residents of Dahieh to leave for their safety.“Should Hezbollah continue to fire toward our cities and communities, the IDF will respond by striking terrorist targets in Dahieh,” the IDF said. The escalation also threatened to complicate efforts to end the war with Iran. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported Monday that Tehran’s negotiating team was suspending indirect exchanges with the United States through mediators in protest of Israeli actions in Lebanon.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on X that Israeli operations in Lebanon violated the U.S.-Iran ceasefire and said Washington and Israel would bear “the consequences of any violation.”Shortly afterward, Tasnim quoted Iranian officials saying no talks with the United States would take place until Israel halted its attacks in Lebanon. The report also said Iran and its “Axis of Resistance” were prepared to retaliate in the Strait of Hormuz and activate other fronts, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea.First published: 19:45, 06.01.26
