European Parliament member Fredi Beleri, who grew up in Albania as a member of the Greek minority, spoke against the tourist development project in that country and said the Albanian government’s decision to go ahead with it is “arbitrary.”

In an interview to TV station Skai Monday, in the wake of Saturday incidents in which a Greek national was injured during a protest, also disputed the Albanian government’s assertion that US President Donald Trump’s don-in-law is involved in the €4 billion project, saying the government is using Kushner as a “bogeyman” to silence protests.

Beleri told Skai the Albanian government went ahead with the project without taking into account the local residents and without the property status of the area having been settled. He said that appeals by the residents to the courts are pending.

Referring to the incidents that occurred, he spoke of “unprecedented events” and accused Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama of not wanting transparency.

Beleri further noted that the companies that appear to be making the investment are Albanian.
