Collector Anand Mohan on Monday released water from Papanasam Dam for the upcoming ‘kar’ season paddy cultivation in Tirunelveli district.Mr. Anand Mohan, after releasing water from the reservoir, said 1,935 acres of land in Vickramasingapuram, Sivanthipuram, Adaiyakarunkulam and Kodarankulam villages would benefit from the water released in Vadakku Kodaimelazhagiyaan Channel, and 870 acres in Chettimedu, Aladiyoor and Ermaalpuram would get water from Therkku Kodaimelazhagiyaan Channel.The water released in Nadhiyunni Channel would benefit 2,460 acres of land in Mela Ambasamudram, Keezha Ambasamudram and Brammadesam villages. Water from Kannadiyan Channel would irrigate another 5,000 acres in Kallidaikurichi, Veeravanallur and Kaarukurichi villages.In all, 10,265 acres of land under four irrigation channels of Tamirabharani Basin would get benefited by the water to be released for 124 days – till October 2 - this year.“Water from Papansam Dam will be released depending upon the rainfall in catchment areas, influx of water into the dam and the storage level in the reservoir. Since the south-west monsoon is yet to start along the Western Ghat’s catchment areas, farmers should use the water judiciously since we have to ensure sufficient drinking water supply also,” Mr. Anand Mohan said.Sub-Collector, Cheranmahadevi, Ayush Gupta, Deputy Director of Kalakkad – Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Ambasamudram Division, Srikant, MLAs Reddiyarpatti V.
