The government is set to develop specialised plans and schemes aimed at addressing the traffic woes in Kottayam town and its surrounding areas. A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting convened by Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan in Kottayam on Monday.According to authorities, a report will be prepared outlining the steps to be taken to ensure that the existing laws and regulations are strictly followed in the town. For this, a committee comprising the District Collector, District Police Chief, Regional Transport Officer, Public Works Roads executive engineer, representatives of KSEB, National Highway Authority of India and Kottayam municipality has been constituted. The committee will conduct a comprehensive study on issues such as illegal parking, encroachments, law violations, bus stop arrangements, and details of auto stands.The Speaker announced that a final decision on subsequent actions will be made following detailed discussions on the draft report submitted by this committee by June 13. “A long-term plan for traffic reform will be prepared keeping in view the development of the town and the surrounding areas. NATPAC will be tasked with conducting a detailed study for this and submitting a report. Future traffic development will be implemented on the basis of this report,” he said.The participants in the meeting pointed out the traffic problems faced in the areas from Chingavanam to Gandhinagar on M.C. Road and proposed potential solutions as well. Suggestions included installing new traffic lights and direction boards, ensuring effective use of bus bays, rearranging stops, preventing buses from halting on stops outside scheduled timings, and relocating electricity transformers that obstruct vehicle movement.
