Government and aided schools across Mysuru district reopened on Monday, June 1, for the 2026-27 academic year, with students receiving a warm welcome from teachers, officials, and local representatives. School reopening festivals, enrolment drives, awareness rallies, and parents’ meetings were organised to mark the beginning of the new academic year and improve enrolment in government schools.T.S. Srivatsa, Krishnaraja MLA, inaugurated the taluk-level ‘School Reopening Festival’ and ‘Mega Parents’ Meeting’ organised by the offices of the Block Education Officer and the Block Resource Coordinator for the Mysuru South educational zone at the Karnataka Public School (KPS) in Kuvempunagar here.Mr. Srivatsa said government schools are emerging as strong competitors to private institutions, driven by improvements in educational quality and infrastructure. “The long-held perception of government schools being inferior is fast disappearing,” he stated.On the progress made by government schools, he noted that only four students had scored 620 marks in the SSLC examination in 2023, but the number has been steadily rising, reflecting the growing emphasis on quality education.He said government schools now boast of new buildings, sanitation facilities, and a conducive learning environment. Through private partnerships, STEM laboratories have also been established in several schools, enabling students to gain practical and hands-on learning experiences.Praising teachers for their dedication, the MLA said they play an invaluable role in shaping children’s future.Headmasters, teachers, School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) members, parents, and members of the public attended the school reopening programme, held with the theme ‘Better Learning, Brighter Future’.As part of the programme, students held an awareness rally carrying placards with messages such as ‘Join government schools’ and ‘Education is the foundation of life’, to encourage greater enrolment in government schools.Warm welcomeAs part of the school reopening programme, the Mysuru district administration accorded a warm welcome to students at the Halladakeri Government Higher Primary School in Nanjangud on Monday.Additional Deputy Commissioner Aishwarya welcomed children with roses and sweets to mark the beginning of the new academic year. She also flagged off an enrolment drive aimed at increasing admissions to government schools and wished the initiative success.During the programme, students received government-sponsored benefits, including free textbooks and uniforms.The programme was attended by Taluk Education Officer M. Mahesh, Block Resource Officer Basavaraju, and others.On the occasion, Ms. Aishwarya also visited the free Mobile Computer Bus initiative and appreciated the efforts being made to provide technology-enabled learning opportunities to children.
