The public spat between Ambalappuzha MLA G. Sudhakaran and Kuttanad MLA Reji Cherian over a visit to the Thottappally Spillway appeared to ease on Monday, with Mr. Sudhakaran clarifying that he had not made any personal remarks against his fellow legislator.“I never said anything against him personally. Everyone should understand the privilege of an MLA. My question is why the superintending engineer of the Irrigation department brought the MLA to my constituency for a survey. What is his authority to bring in an MLA? I have written about this to the Privilege Committee,” Mr. Sudhakaran told mediapersons. The controversy erupted after Mr. Sudhakaran publicly criticised Mr. Cherian for visiting the Thottappally Spillway without informing him, despite the site falling within the Ambalappuzha Assembly constituency. Mr. Cherian, however, responded sharply and warned that he would retaliate if personal remarks were directed at him.The public spat between the two ruling front legislators triggered sharp reactions, particularly from the United Democratic Front (UDF), and the mounting criticism over Mr. Sudhakaran’s public attack appears to have prompted him to strike a more conciliatory note.Mr. Cherian had visited the Thottappally Spillway on May 25 as part of monsoon preparedness measures in Kuttanad. The visit, however, irked Mr. Sudhakaran, who maintained that as the local MLA representing the constituency where the spillway is located, he should have been informed in advance.
