LEBANON, Tenn. — Denny Hamlin emerged from a last-lap, three-wide battle with his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates in a Nashville Superspeedway thriller Sunday night, earning his 62nd career NASCAR Cup Series victory.Hamlin moved to within one win of the late Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time wins list, capping his victory with Busch’s classic bow to honor his longtime teammate.Somehow, Hamlin came out ahead of current teammates Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe as the Toyota trio raced hard for the win and tried to manipulate the air off each other’s cars after a restart with four laps to go.They were three abreast at one point on the white-flag lap, but Hamlin outdueled Bell for the finish. It was an eventful night for Hamlin, who was awarded the pole after qualifying was rained out — but coughed up the lead before the green flag even waved.Hamlin blatantly jumped the start of the race before the official start zone and was immediately black-flagged with a pass-through penalty. The NASCAR rulebook states: “The start and all restarts must occur within the designated restart zone.” Hamlin clearly accelerated before the line that marks the beginning of the zone, and it wasn’t particularly close. Hamlin had to drive down pit road and fell to 38th place after his penalty but then was able to stay on the lead lap — although it certainly cost him stage points in Stage 1.Eventually, Hamlin rallied back with his fast car and ran with his teammates, then put on a master class at the finish.“Starting first, going to last and back to first,” Hamlin said. “I definitely jumped the start, no doubt about that.”Bell said he had nobody to blame for losing the duel with Hamlin but himself.“It’s pretty simple: disappointment,” Bell said. — Jeff Gluck
