In an otherwise promising weekend in which the Boston Red Sox took two of three games from the American League Central-leading Cleveland Guardians, they still received bad news on two of their star players. On Friday, outfielder Roman Anthony experienced a setback in his recovery from a sprained right ring finger. The 22-year-old had felt discomfort after he began swinging off a tee for the first time this week. He was shut down for the next “handful of days,” interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters in Cleveland. On Sunday, left-hander Garrett Crochet had his own setback with left lat tightness as he works his way back from left shoulder inflammation. He’d been scheduled to throw his second live batting practice session on Tuesday since landing on the injured list April 26, but will instead visit with doctors this week and get an MRI. Crochet faced hitters for the first time earlier last week but experienced lat tightness at the end of the homestand.“Feels like a very minor setback; it sucks to even call it a setback, it doesn’t feel like it even deserves that title,” Crochet told reporters in Cleveland this weekend.Nevertheless, the Red Sox are proceeding cautiously with their ace. While the Red Sox have been without Anthony and Crochet for the better part of the past month, both had been making progress toward returning at a crucial point in the schedule, with the Red Sox facing AL East teams in four of the next five series. The injuries don’t change anything in the immediate term for the Red Sox, but they continue to highlight the uphill battle Boston is facing, eight games below .500 as the calendar ticks to June 1.Despite the tough news — and being short-handed Sunday in Cleveland — the Red Sox still managed to put up nine runs for the second straight game in a 9-4 win over the Guardians to take the series.
