Euphoria season 3 has been building up to a specific moment that left viewers heartbroken.09:43, 01 Jun 2026Euphoria's season 3 finale featured one of the most devastating scenes of the entire series.‌Warning: The following article contains spoilers from Euphoria season three, episode eight.‌Euphoria season three has just come to an end and one of the most harrowing storylines of the Sky and HBO Max drama included Zendaya's Rue Bennett.‌Fans, who have shared mixed reviews, had waited more than four years for the latest season of Euphoria and the finale titled In God We Trust was to be the longest TV episode in HBO's history. At the start of the episode, Rue was betrayed by Faye Valentine (played by Chloe Cherry) after an attempt double-cross both of her rival crime bosses - Laurie (Martha Kelly) and Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).She was able to make a narrow escape but took a beating in the process, and ultimately started taking painkilers again in order to heal. While in hospital, she was desperate not to break her sobriety.‌Rue later heard on the news that her old friend Fezco O'Neill (the late Angus Cloud) had escaped from prison and she went to find him, but this brought back difficult memories for Rue.How does Rue die in Euphoria? As Rue reminisced over old times with Fezco, she remembered the time she was driven home from rehab by her mother, Leslie (Nika King).‌As she arrived back at her old neighbourhood, pursued by police, she found Leslie sitting at the dining table, weeping and holding out her hand. However, this was just a fantasy as in reality, viewers saw Rue crying whilst high as she fantasised about the reunion. She also remembered being held by her late father and her hand reached out before the screen changed to black.‌Ali Muhammed (Colman Domingo) found Rue's dead body in the living room before breaking down in tears. He found out she had taken pills and after testing the medication for fentanyl, he discovered they were indeed laced with the opioid.‌Alamo had sent Rue away to rest with painkillers and money, and it seemed he knew full-well he was giving Rue the fentanyl-laced medication.Ali then had to inform Leslie that Rue had died, before writing her name in his book of addicts he had supported and sadly lost.He later opened up about Rue's death and how the fentanyl crisis had caused him to relapse into drink.‌Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on Rue's devastating death, with one saying: "WAIT… so Rue was already dead from the overdose this whole time? And her reuniting with her mom was just her imagining one final goodbye before dying??? Nah this ending completely shattered me."Another commented: "What gets me is that Rue died while trying to do better, she was sober, but people thought she had an od bc she was an addict, so no one had any reason to think otherwise, but in reality she was murdered."The show's creator, Sam Levinson, confirmed the show would not return for a fourth season, telling The New York Times Popcast: "In terms of the story we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me."Article continues belowEuphoria is streaming on NOW, Sky Atlantic and HBO Max.For support or advice on any of the issues raised in the programme, call Samaritans on 116 123 or the Frank drugs helpline on 0300 123 6600.
