TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool officially announced the departure of Ibrahima Konate after his contract expired on June 30, 2026. The French defender left Anfield on a free transfer after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract with the club."Liverpool can confirm that Ibrahima Konate will leave the club upon the expiration of his contract this summer," Liverpool said in a statement on their official website on Sunday, May 31, 2026.Konate's decision to leave had actually been apparent for the past few seasons, as negotiations for a contract extension became increasingly difficult. Liverpool reportedly opened talks over a new contract since the end of 2023, but discussions between the two parties failed to reach a consensus.Konate then delivered an emotional farewell messageto Liverpool and its supporters. He reflected on his five-year spell with the Reds as one of the most rewarding periods of his career."Five years ago, I arrived as a young player with big dreams. Today, I leave with memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life," said Konate. The French national team player admitted he was honored to wear the Liverpool shirt and experience many moments with the club, both happy and sad."Representing this club has been an honor. We shared many incredible moments together, ups and downs, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and painful moments that we will always cherish, none more painful than losing our brother, Diogo (Jota)," said Konate.During his time at Liverpool, Konate was a key pillar of the Reds' defense. He played a key role in Liverpool's success in winning the 2024/25 Premier League title.Konate's departure adds to the list of key players who left Liverpool in the summer of 2026. Previously, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson had also parted ways with the club.Salah is known to have terminated his contract early and announced his departure some time ago. Meanwhile, Robertson will leave Anfield after his contract expires at the end of June 2026.The departure of these three senior players is expected to make Liverpool more active in the summer transfer market to maintain squad strength. In the summer of 2025, Liverpool previously spent a significant amount of money to strengthen the team, bringing in several names such as Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni. In the center-back position, Liverpool currently has Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet as young options in the back line. However, their lack of experience is considered to mean the club still needs an additional experienced center-back to accompany Virgil van Dijk next season.Read: Arne Slot Sacked as Liverpool Head Coach After Season FailureClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
