Specifically, the contract is for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program, which is designed to track airborne threats to the U.S. from space. Going forward, SpaceX will provide global tracking capabilities to U.S. military forces.
Government officials in Washington, D.C. say the program addresses challenges faced by the U.S. military as adversaries develop increasingly sophisticated missiles and airborne attack systems, many of which can bypass traditional detection.
Big Win for SpaceX
“By focusing these capabilities to the space domain, we are providing the Joint Force with sustained battlespace awareness of contested airspace,” said Col. Ryan Frazier, acting Space Force portfolio acquisition executive.
