For Adebayo Adelabu, the road to Agodi Government House has once again proved steep, winding and painfully elusive. The former Minister of Power, stylishly charismatic and deeply rooted in Oyo’s political establishment, had hoped that 2026 would finally become the year destiny smiled kindly on his long-cherished governorship ambition. But fate, it seems, has chosen another script.
When Adelabu tendered his resignation as Minister of Power last month, many within political and elite circles interpreted the move as the clearest indication yet that he was prepared to stake everything for Oyo State’s top job. Abuja, with all its glittering privileges and corridors of influence, was momentarily set aside for a more personal and enduring pursuit — governing the state that has remained central to his political aspirations for years.
For the man fondly called “Penkelemesi,” it was expected to be a triumphant homecoming.
The calculations appeared politically sound. He had name recognition, federal visibility, loyal supporters, a pedigree difficult to ignore, a heavy political war chest and more significantly, many believed his stewardship at the federal level would strengthen his bargaining power within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
