NewsWorld newsCanary IslandsA British man has died in Fuerteventura after suffering a cardiac arrest following a helicopter rescue from the sea20:52, 30 May 2026Updated 07:07, 31 May 2026A British man has died in Fuerteventura after he was pulled from the sea in a dramatic helicopter rescue.‌Emergency services were called to Playa del Águila, also known as Playa de La Escalera, in the La Oliva municipality in the north of the Canary Island, at around 5.30pm on Thursday, after reports that two people were in difficulty in the water off the beach.‌The man was located by rescuers from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) helicopter, Canarian Weekly reports. After being winched to safety, crews found he was in cardiac arrest and immediately began CPR while transporting him to a nearby landing site.‌Paramedics, a medical helicopter crew and staff from a local health centre attempted to resuscitate him on the ground. However, he was sadly confirmed dead at the scene.‌The second swimmer managed to get out of the sea without assistance and was treated on the beach by paramedics, according to the Canary Islands Government’s 112 Emergency Service. The person declined to be taken to hospital after receiving treatment at the scene.Lifeguards from La Oliva beach service, maritime rescue teams, Civil Protection volunteers, local police officers and firefighters all took part in the rescue operation. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation and is preparing an official report into the incident.Playa del Águila is a wild, secluded beach on Fuerteventura's rugged northwest coast, about three miles south of El Cotillo. Renowned for its untouched beauty, it features orange-gold sands, turquoise waters and dramatic volcanic cliffs, accessed only by a steep, 130-step rustic staircase, named La Escalera.Article continues belowAt high tide, the water reaches the cliffs and the beach completely disappears.
