The global box office has witnessed several massive successes in 2026. India delivered one of its biggest action spectacles with Dhurandhar 2, while Hollywood scored major hits with Michael, Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Together, these films have generated billions of dollars worldwide. Yet, the year's most successful story does not belong to any of these big-budget productions. Instead, it belongs to a small, independent horror film made in less than a month by a young filmmaker who started his career making videos on YouTube. From YouTube creator to Obsession taking over box officeThe film in question is Obsession, an independent psychological horror thriller written, directed and edited by 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker. Before making the jump to feature films, Barker built an online following by creating horror-themed content on YouTube.According to Hindustan Times report, Obsession was produced on a budget of just $750,000, roughly Rs 6–7 crore. The film was reportedly shot in around 20 days, making its achievement even more surprising. Despite its modest resources, the horror thriller has become one of the biggest box office stories of the year.Since its theatrical release, Obsession has earned more than $80 million worldwide, crossing the Rs 750 crore mark globally. That means the film has generated returns of over 100 times its production budget. Industry estimates suggest its profit margin has exceeded 10,000%, making it one of the most profitable films released in 2026.The success is particularly noteworthy because it has outperformed several blockbuster releases when measured by return on investment. While films like Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, Michael and Project Hail Mary have earned significantly higher overall collections, none of them has come close to matching Obsession's profitability.A simple wish that turns into a nightmareThe story centres on Bear, a music store employee played by Michael Johnston. Hoping to win the affection of his childhood crush Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, Bear comes across a mysterious supernatural toy that appears capable of granting wishes. What initially feels like a dream come true quickly spirals into something much darker. As his wish begins to come true, Bear discovers that every desire comes with a terrifying price. The film gradually transforms from a romantic fantasy into a disturbing psychological nightmare, exploring obsession, control and the consequences of trying to manipulate fate.Audiences and critics have praised the film for its inventive premise and effective horror elements. The psychological approach to storytelling, combined with its relatively simple setup, has helped the movie stand out in a crowded marketplace filled with franchise films and sequels. The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025 before receiving a theatrical release in the United States on May 15, 2026. It later arrived in Indian cinemas on May 29.What we know about Obsession OTT releaseDespite growing interest from the audience, Obsession is not expected to arrive on streaming platforms immediately. Several reports suggest the film could eventually stream first on Peacock before becoming available on Netflix at a later stage. However, neither platform has officially announced a release date. One reason for the delay may be the film's continued success in theatres. Jason Blum, the head of Blumhouse and the film's distributor, recently indicated that strong audience demand could keep the movie on the big screen for longer.Speaking to Variety, Jason Blum said he strongly believes films should spend enough time in theatres before moving to streaming platforms. He added that it is encouraging to see audiences continuing to support cinema screenings rather than waiting for an early OTT release. According to Blumhouse's usual policy, films earning less than $50 million get a 17-day theatrical window, while bigger hits stay in theatres for at least 31 days. Since Obsession has performed exceptionally well at the box office, its OTT release could be delayed, although industry estimates suggest it may arrive sometime after mid-June if it follows the studio's standard pattern.
