Kokohinau Marae in Te Teko will host an influx of manuhiri (visitors) over the coming days, as people converge in the small Bay of Plenty settlement to pay tribute to Ta Hirini Moko Mead.

The highly respected leader and pioneering academic of Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Tūhourangi and Ngāi Tūhoe descent has died at the age of 99.

Ta Hirini Moko Mead was the founding professor of Māori at Victoria University and he established the first Department of Māori Studies in Aotearoa.
