Israeli broadcaster Channel 13 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an urgent security assessment with defence minister Israel Katz, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and senior northern commanders after a major escalation on the Lebanese front.

The channel said “the Israeli army was surprised by the scale of the rocket fire and Hezbollah’s decision to change its fire policy in response to the expansion of the Israeli army’s ground operations in southern Lebanon”.

It added that “dozens of rockets were fired from Lebanon toward the north on Saturday” and that, for the first time since the ceasefire began on 17 April, rockets reached the northern Israeli cities of Safad and Nahariya.

Channel 13 described the situation as “utter chaos and an uncontrollable situation”, adding that “the government is not concerned about this”.

Israeli Army Radio reported that warning sirens have sounded 1,099 times in northern Israel since the start of the ceasefire.
