NewsUK NewsRoad Traffic AccidentsTwo people have died and three others are seriously injured after a crash on the A1 in Northumberland in the early hours of Saturday19:35, 30 May 2026A crash on the A1 in Northumberland has left two people dead and three others seriously injured.Northumbria Police was alerted shortly before 4am on Saturday to a two-vehicle collision on the A1 at the junction for Wandylaw, north of Alnwick.It is reported that a silver Nissan Juke was travelling southbound when, for reasons yet to be established, it collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa travelling in the opposite direction. Emergency services attended the scene, where the drivers of both vehicles - a woman in her 50s from the Juke and a man in his 40s from the Corsa - were sadly pronounced dead.Two passengers in the Juke - a woman in her 20s and a secondary-school-aged boy - along with a female passenger from the Corsa in her 20s, have been taken to hospital with serious injuries and remain in hospital. The next of kin of all occupants have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.A section of the A1 in both directions between Ellingham and Purdy Lodge was closed for around ten hours, but has since reopened, Chronicle Live reports.Officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.Sergeant Alex Partington, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a devastating incident where two people have tragically lost their lives while three others remain in a serious condition. I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of all affected at this incredibly difficult time, and we will continue to support them in any way we can."He added: "Our investigation to establish the exact circumstances leading to this collision is now under way, and we are already conducting a range of enquiries.
