Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), on Saturday visited V. O. Chidambaranar Port and reviewed renewable energy and green infrastructure initiatives undertaken by the port.During his visit, VOC Port exchanged memorandum of understanding with Bureau Veritas (India) and AM Green Ammonia (India). The MoU with with Bureau Veritas (India) covers green port certification, emissions accounting, ESG reporting, safety validation, development of bunkering practices and establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green fuels and sustainability.The MoU with AM Green Ammonia (India) aims to facilitate collaboration in the development of an ammonia production plant with a capacity of 1 million tons per annum in Thoothukudi. The initiative includes the development of green ammonia handling, storage and bunkering infrastructure, pilot bunkering operations, safety procedures and training programs. This project is expected to support the development of green fuel corridors connecting VOC Port with major ports in Europe and Asia.Mr. Sarangi reviewed the port’s key renewable energy and sustainability initiative, including pilot green hydrogen plant of 10 Nm3, EV charging station and ongoing 9 MW wind power project, where officials highlighted the project progress.He also inspected the 750 m3 green ethanol bunkering and refuelling facility at the port.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sarangi said the green energy initiatives undertaken by VOC Port, particularly in solar and wind energy as well as green hydrogen and methanol manufacturing and bunkering, had emerged as a model for green transition not only in India but also globally.Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson, VOC Port Authority, said the port’s initiatives in green ammonia, hydrogen and alternative marine fuels reflected its commitment to the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emission and move towards Net Zero.
