They’re being called upon more often as the world gets more dangerous and unstable, so it’s only right they get a pay rise that reflects that.”A Labour source added: “The Tories cut real-terms pay for our troops, we’re upping it.”Because of the pay rises over the last two years, all ranks, even at the most junior entry level, are paid at least living wage, which was not the case under the Tories. The survey showed than four in ten personnel (45%) are satisfied with their service life in general, up 3% since last year. Under the Tories, satisfaction with the rate of basic pay fell sharply between 2021 and 2023, but has increased to 37%.Satisfaction with service pay peaked at 52% in 2010 under the last Labour government. The incoming pay rise will be the third since Labour swept to power, with the first boost the biggest in twenty years. There was similar progress on military housing, with satisfaction with requests for maintenance increasing again under Labour – jumping from a low of 19% under the Tories to 39% following a major defence housing programme. The Defence Secretary vowed to to bring 36,000 military homes back into public ownership last year, and pledged to upgrade 9-in-10 military family homes. Rapid delivery has already seen over 1,200 of the worst homes upgraded across the country, with more underway.Commenting on the survey, Labour’s Defence Secretary John Healey MP said: “Since day one, our Labour government has been on a mission to lift military morale, reversing a long-term Tory decline by improving the lives of our brave armed forces personnel and their families, in recognition of the extraordinary service they give to our nation."Satisfaction with service life collapsed to record lows under the Tories, who failed our forces with low pay, hollowed-out capabilities and the scandal of unfit military homes. They created a crisis in recruitment and retention just as the world was becoming more dangerous."Article continues below“Labour is turning that around, with our record increase in defence investment enabling better pay, better conditions and better housing for our outstanding UK Armed Forces personnel. This is the difference Labour in government can make: renewing our commitment to those who serve and making Britain safer: secure at home and strong abroad.”An MOD spokesperson said: “The Armed Forces’ Pay Review Body (AFPRB) has submitted its report and recommendations.“The details of this year’s pay award will be confirmed shortly, and any pay award will be backdated to the start of the Armed Forces pay year on 1 April 2026.”
