According to the EFCC, the suspects had operated the lucrative blackmail ring for a long time, leveraging Mamuda's residual military background, fake tactical gear, and forged identity documents to bypass security checks and instill terror in their victims.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has cracked down on a high-profile criminal syndicate specialised in tracking, harassing, and extorting millions of naira from unsuspecting youths in the South-East region under the guise of carrying out official anti-fraud operations.

The anti-graft agency announced the breakthrough on Saturday, May 30, 2026, through a short video documentary shared across its official X (formerly Twitter) handles and monitored by SaharaReporters.

The video exposes the faces of the syndicate's kingpin, Haruna Mamuda — a dismissed military personnel who has been parading himself as a high-ranking EFCC operative — alongside his personal driver and operational partner-in-crime, Salifu Mustafa.

The documentary released by the commission shows Mamuda and his cohort, Mustafa, aggressively cornering, profiling, and intimidating a group of defenseless young men during one of their illegal raids.
