Residents across parts of Delhi-NCR received an "Extremely Severe Alert" notification on their phones on Saturday, warning of dangerous weather conditions over the next three hours.According to the alert, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, strong winds, moderate to heavy rainfall and hailstorms are likely to affect several areas. Wind speeds are expected to range between 60 and 80 kmph, with gusts potentially reaching 90 kmph. The warning urged residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during the storm. People were also advised to stay away from open spaces, trees, electric poles and other vulnerable structures due to the risks posed by lightning and high-speed winds. The alert comes amid rapidly changing weather conditions across northern India, bringing sudden thunderstorms and intense rainfall activity.Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds."There is a yellow alert for the day, warning of possible very light to light rain, accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty wind of speed 40-50 kmph towards the afternoon and evening," an IMD official said.Similar weather conditions are expected to persist on Sunday, with the weather department extending the yellow alert.Meanwhile, the IMD has also issued red and orange alerts for parts of Delhi on Saturday. The weather department said a dust storm followed by a severe thunderstorm, accompanied by lightning, hail and light to moderate rainfall, is very likely over parts of central, northeast, southwest, west, northwest and north Delhi.Wind speeds in these areas are expected to range between 70 and 90 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph. The IMD further said moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain are likely over parts of southeast, east, central, northeast, south, southwest, west, northwest and north Delhi, as well as Shahdara and New Delhi districts. Winds may blow at speeds of 40 to 60 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph.Light rainfall is also likely over parts of south Delhi, the weather department added. The IMD has advised residents to remain indoors, avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from weak structures and unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorm activity.According to the weather department, the sudden change in weather is being driven by an active western disturbance affecting northwest India, along with an associated cyclonic circulation that has increased moisture and atmospheric instability over the region. The spell comes after several days of hot weather in the national capital and is expected to provide temporary relief from the heat.Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 36 degrees Celsius. With PTI Inputs
