The MAGA fanbase erupted in fury after country superstar Martina McBride announced on Thursday that she is backing out of The Great American State Fair, a President Donald Trump-aligned event she claimed she was misled about.“I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,” McBride said in an announcement on Thursday. “I asked lots of questions and was assured this was a nonpartisan event that was meant to celebrate ALL 50 states.”McBride joins a growing list of performers who are dropping out at the event scheduled to be held at the National Mall and organized by the self-described “non-partisan” Freedom 250 organization created via a presidential order. The singer wrote that she initially believed “this was a great way to celebrate the states and also bring people together in the way that only music can,” and “saw it as just a bigger version of so many state fairs.” “Sounds fun, right? Wholesome even. Yesterday things started changing and what we were told is, in fact, not what is happening,” McBride wrote. “I’ve spent my entire career singing songs about real people with real issues. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be a voice for those who have felt like they didn’t have one,” she continued. “It greatly upsets me that any fan who has been moved by my music may now feel like I’m abandoning the meaning behind those songs. I assure you, that is not the case.” McBride’s statement and withdrawal from the event sparked anger amongst those loyal to Trump, including Richard Grenell, the president’s former acting director of national intelligence, who took to X and slammed the country singer. “You’ve always been a woke Lefty,” Grenell wrote. Other right-wing accounts came in droves to pile on the artist. “What a coward,” conservative influencer Tomi Lahren replied. “Imagine being this weak,” right-wing page Catturd said on X. Notorious MAGA-friendly page Libs of TikTok also called McBride “pathetic.” However, despite the backlash from conservatives, McBride also received a round of support from others online. “Martina, you are a beautiful artist, mother, citizen, American. You have always been exactly as you are in this moment… authentic and real. So moved by you and proud to know you.” Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow replied to McBride’s Instagram post.Others chimed in as well:
