GUWAHATI: A truck driver was killed while a few police personnel were injured in an attack by unknown armed miscreants as fresh violence broke out along National Highway-202 (NH-202) in Manipur's Ukhrul district.The incident took place near TM Kasom, around 6 km from Shangkhai Kuki village, where security forces had been conducting operations to clear road blockades and facilitate the movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities to Ukhrul town.Chief minister Y Khemchand Singh condemned the ambush carried out on a goods vehicle along the National Highway-202 between Leingangching and TS Kasom under Litan police station, Ukhrul district.He expressed his deepest condolences on the loss of life of a truck driver from West Bengal who died due to bullet injuries. Ambushing goods vehicles and taking the life of a driver, who plays a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted supply of essential items across the state is one of the most cowardly acts and intends to aggravate the tense situation prevailing in the area, he said.The chief minister informed that search and cordon operation is being carried out in nearby areas to nab and punish the culprits.A police official said that security personnel were dispersing protesters and securing the highway. As part of the operation, forces reportedly used tear gas shells and mock bombs to remove obstructions and restore normal movement along the route.In a separate development, the Shangkhai Village Authority alleged that five women sustained minor injuries after being hit by tear gas shells during the security operation aimed at ensuring the passage of goods-laden vehicles along the highway. The village authority stated that the injured women received medical attention from security personnel and were reported to be out of danger.Movement of trucks and other vehicles remained affected along the national highway in Manipur as both Kukis and Nagas have imposed a bandh and economic blockade over the issue of missing persons following the May 13 ambush in Manipur. Tension broke out following an ambush on May 13 in which three church leaders belonging to the Thadou tribe were killed.
