On Friday, May 29, British police announced that charges have been filed against a Greek citizen accused of cooperating with a foreign intelligence service, which police say is "believed to belong to Iran."
According to counter-terrorism police, the charge against 46-year-old Ioannis Aidenidis, a resident of Munich, Germany, involves the targeting of a journalist working for the Iran International television network. Police confirmed that the Greek citizen was arrested on Saturday, May 23, and has been charged under the UK National Security Act.
The detained individual is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates' Court today to answer the charges, which relate to Iran and the targeting of a UK-based journalist at the Iran International network.
The name of the journalist was not disclosed in the London Metropolitan Police statement; however, in recent years, a number of journalists and staff members of the Iran International network in London have been targeted by online and physical attacks by individuals affiliated with the Islamic Republic regime.
In April, three individuals were charged in connection with an attempted arson attack on a building linked to the network in northwest London, though the fire resulted in no damage or injuries.
