INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — Calling Evan Mobley “part of our future” and a “franchise-caliber player,” Cleveland Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman’s words should cast serious doubt on one of the hottest rumored moves coming in the NBA’s offseason.Mobley for Giannis Antetokounmpo? Seems unlikely after Altman’s season-ending review on Friday.“I’m not going to speculate on any players outside these walls,” Altman said in his first public comments after the Cavs were swept out of the Eastern Conference finals by the New York Knicks. “All I can tell you is, since Evan’s been here, we’ve had the third-best record in the league for five years. Now, we don’t have a championship to show for that yet, right? Boston and Denver, the other two ahead of us, they have a championship to show for that, but all Evan has done is impact winning. He’s been remarkable for us in terms of our ascent the last five years. He’s a huge part of what we do.”The Cavs reached the conference finals for the first time since 2018 and the first time without LeBron James on the roster since 1992. They also had the NBA’s most expensive roster, ever, at $229 million before taxes, and are on pace to pay 12 players $224.5 million next season — notable in part because there could be up to 17 players on the roster.Altman said the Cavs would consider a move to cut salary and get under the salary aprons — which are projected to be $209 million (first apron) and $222 million (second apron) — if “it makes sense to do it.” Teams over those apron lines are greatly restricted in how they can make roster changes.“There’s no urgency to get out of (the aprons) just to get out of (them),” Altman added, “because then you’d be shedding contracts and good players to do it.”Altman said the only directive from team owner Dan Gilbert is to improve, which could happen internally, or through moves made “around the edges” or a “big ticket move. We’re going to look at all of it.”So there it is, the window left slightly ajar for the Cavs to make easily the splashiest trade of the summer. But otherwise, everything Altman said about Mobley made it sound certain they will keep him.Mobley is 24 and will make $50.1 million next season. He is most commonly linked to a Giannis trade because:
