Image: Getty ImagesYle News16:59The Finnish men's national ice hockey team faces Canada in the semi-final of the World Championship on Saturday night in Zürich, Switzerland.That follows Thursday evening's 4-1 win over Czechia, with the Lions advancing to the semi-finals of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship for the first time since 2022.The Lions lost in quarter-final matchups against Canada in 2023, Sweden in 2024, and the US last year. In 2022, the team won its first Olympic gold at the Beijing Winter Games and the World Championship at home in Tampere.The Finnish men most recently encountered Canada in the semi-finals of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, when Canada narrowly defeated the Lions by a score of 3–2 on a last-second goal.Saturday's game starts at 9pm. Before that, host Switzerland meets Norway in the other semi-final starting at 4.20pm. On Sunday, the bronze match starts at 4.30pm, followed by the final at 9.20pm.2030 in Finland and LatviaOn Friday, the IIHF announced that Helsinki will co-host the 2030 championships with Riga, Latvia.The games will be played from 17 May to 2 June, 2030. One preliminary round and quarterfinals will be played in each host city. The semi-finals and medal matches will be played in Helsinki.The last time Helsinki hosted the Men's World Championships was in 2012. It co-hosted in 2013 and 2022.
