AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday urged the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) regime to ensure water from the Cauvery, to be released during the Kuruvai cultivation season, reached the tail areas of the river system. In a statement, he contended that even when the election campaign was on for the Assembly elections, C and D channels (secondary watercourses branching off from the primary “A” and “B” of the Cauvery system) were desilted “in haste”. This would impair agricultural activity, in view of the scheduled date of opening of the Mettur dam being June 12. Besides, the removal of silt had not been carried out properly in respect of drains. A permanent solution had to be found to tackle the sprouting of water hyacinth at the junctions of the Coleroon, Korayaru, and Vennar, and their tributaries, Mr. Palaniswami added.
