On Saturday night, the Cincinnati Reds will host the second game of their series against the MLB-leading Atlanta Braves at Great American Ball Park. But Spencer Steer could end up facing an even more vexing opponent.A “unique baseball card bobblehead” featuring the Reds outfielder will be given out to fans in attendance. While bobblehead promotions tend to draw crowds, they haven’t always been a great omen for the players featured on the collectibles. The last three bobbleheads the Reds have given out — Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Noelvi Marte and Ke’Bryan Hayes — might even suggest there’s a curse associated with the team’s promotional items. On Encarnacion-Strand’s bobblehead night last September, he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts….playing for the Reds’ Triple-A team in Louisville. Marte went 1-for-4 for the Reds during his featured game last month — it’s just that 24 hours later he was on his way to Louisville to join the Bats, an assignment he still hasn’t returned from. Hayes was placed on the IL the day before his bobblehead was given out last Saturday. Some of it could just be unfortunate timing.According to Reds spokesman Michael Anderson, it takes about six months to design, approve, manufacture and transport the tens of thousands of bobbleheads given out at the gate. So there’s only so much the team can do if a player is injured, demoted or traded during the lengthy lead time between the commission and giveaway of the items. The Reds have issued 21 bobbleheads of individual current players since 2021 and not all of them have been flops: Hunter Greene was 2-0 and saw his ERA drop after his bobblehead last year (shhh… don’t mention that he hasn’t pitched this year due to injury). Elly De La Cruz had two bobblehead nights last season and between them was a 55-game stretch that saw him put up his best numbers of the season. Joey Votto didn’t play at all in 2023 before his final bobblehead night as an active player, but did return weeks later and even homered in his first game back that season.Steer, who has appeared in all but two of the Reds’ games so far this season, would certainly love to avoid finding his way onto the following list of the 10 most unlucky Reds bobbleheads since 2021.10.
