The Kremlin has rejected the idea of European mediation in possible peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, arguing that the European Union cannot be considered neutral because of its political and military support for Kyiv.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Europe has positioned itself directly on Ukraine’s side in the conflict and therefore cannot claim the role of mediator. “Right now, Europe is a party to the conflict on the side of Ukraine,” Peskov said, adding that European-supplied weapons are being used against Russian forces.
According to him, Moscow sees the EU as actively involved in the war rather than as an independent diplomatic actor. He argued that this makes any mediation role unacceptable from Russia’s perspective.
Peskov also criticized Brussels for what he described as a breakdown in communication with Moscow. “The complete refusal of dialogue with Russia is Brussels’ biggest mistake,” he said, blaming the current diplomatic deadlock on the EU’s approach toward Russia since the start of the war.
His comments came after statements by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who acknowledged that the European Union cannot act as a neutral intermediary in negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow because it openly backs Ukraine and is defending its own security interests.
