Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets Thursday to knock the former finalist out of the French Open in the second round.
Arnaldi beat the Greek player 7-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in a match that marked a measure of revenge after losing to Tsitsipas in 2024.
The defeat continued a prolonged slump for Tsitsipas, the 2021 French Open finalist and former world No 3, who has now failed to advance beyond the second round in his last seven Grand Slam appearances.
Tsitsipas has dropped to No 79 in the world rankings, a sharp decline for the 27-year-old Greek, who was once considered among the leading contenders of his generation.
