Fern Britton reveals why she really left This Morning for first time as she revealed that she was 'decimated' on set by editors who made her cry profusely11:45, 29 May 2026Updated 11:45, 29 May 2026Fern Britton reveals why she really left BBC Breakfast after being "decimated" and told she was "terrible" half way through a day of filming.‌Fern, 68, was a regular co-host on BBC Breakfast, formerly known as Breakfast Time, appearing from September 1983 and 1986. She has now revealed the reason why she decided to leave and move on to greener pastures.‌"I left because I was very unhappy there. The editor hated me, Frank hated me. It was made very, very difficult for me," she admitted.‌The star made this confession while in conversation with James O'Brien, on his Full Disclosure podcast. She explained that there was one incident that led to her leaving, as she was told she was "terrible" by the editor of the show."'There was one morning when the editor walked in at 8 o'clock sort of halfway through the morning and he came through the forest of cameras and he said to me: 'You are terrible, you are awful, now sit down there and do another hour'.‌"After the show, he called me into his office and locked it, he was in there with his deputy editor and they just shredded me and I cried and cried and cried."She explained that she was then told to smarten herself up before leaving the office, and forced to put makeup on before leaving his office."It was a Friday and he said you're not leaving this office until you put some make-up on. I said 'It's in the bag, on the desk' and he went and he got my bag and I had to put my make-up on in front of him.‌James asked: 'Because he didn't want everyone to know you'd been crying?'To this, Fern concluded: 'What he did was really bad, it really decimated me.'‌The clip of Fern's confession was shared on social media, and Fern garnered support from fans. Supernanny Jo Frost commented: "Abuse! Misogynistic behaviour.""Absolutely despicable behavior, you were great and so personable," said another commenter. "I thought @fernbritton was lovely and such a great presence on tv," said another.Fern also appeared on This Morning for a decade from 1999 until her departure in 2009. The star was a stalwart of the programme, appearing alongside John Leslie from 1999 until 2002 and then Phillip Schofield from 2002 until she left.‌The star abruptly left the series after a decade and has revealed that she was 'treated poorly' at that workplace too.Speaking on the Ray D’Arcy Show in 2020, she said: “Something happened and I thought, 'That's it really' and I walked away and resigned. I was treated pretty poorly, actually. And after a while I just thought, 'Sod it’."Famously, before she left the ITV show, Fern had fallen out with her co-host Phillip and the pair were reported to being in a 'bitter feud'.‌In his autobiography, Life Is What You Make It, Phil addressed a blazing row he had with Fern which he believes was the final nail in the coffin. Phillip said he and Fern argued in a makeup room in 2009 over the content of a show, and he was "stunned" when she accused him of "meddling."Phil said: "I walked back into the makeup room and calmly said, 'Please don't do that to me again.' I think, for whatever reason, that was the point Fern decided she didn't want to do This Morning any more."Fern also told The Daily Mail in 2024 that Phillip was a component in her decision: “To leave This Morning? Ultimately, yes. I loved it and I would probably still be there if… Phillip and I were not getting on very well at that stage.”Article continues belowLike this story?
