Chung Mong-gyu will step down as president of the Korea Football Association (KFA) after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bowing to pressure from years of controversy that turned fans against him and drew government scrutiny.

He announced the decision in a statement issued through the KFA on Friday, just two weeks before the World Cup begins, setting his departure for right after the closing ceremony on July 19.

"After this World Cup ends, I intend to step down from the position of KFA president," Chung said. "I will give it my all with the belief that supporting the national team to deliver results at the tournament is my final duty as president."

Chung took office in 2013 as the 52nd KFA president and extended his term three times. His departure brings the curtain down on a 13-year run.
