The former Glory kickboxing world champion was controversially stopped by Oleksandr Usyk in their heavyweight encounter in Egypt last weekend10:49, 29 May 2026Rico Verhoeven admits he only showed a 'few tools' in his fight with Oleksandr Usyk and is confident he can capitalise should the pair trade leather again.‌The 37-year-old ended his glittering kickboxing career last year in a bid to try his luck in a new sport, and was quickly presented with an opportunity to fight the Ukrainian at the Pyramids of Giza over in Egypt. Despite having one fight in the squared-circle prior, Verhoeven stunned the world of boxing last weekend after going toe-to-toe with Usyk.‌Verhoeven was relentless in his approach before controversially being stopped in the 11th round. The stoppage seemed to take place after the bell had sounded, leaving boxing fans enraged by the decision. The Dutch star was even up on one of the three judges' scorecards before the ending of the contest.‌Many have called for an immediate rematch, but Usyk - who claims he will have only two more fights before retiring - looks set to be ordered to face Agit Kabayel next. Should Verhoeven get another crack at the two-time undisputed heavyweight champion, he believes the end result could play out differently.FOLLOW OUR FIGHTING FB PAGE! "I definitely hurt him in different spots, especially to the body.‌"Not hurt to the point where I was close to getting him out of there, but the next day, he will have felt that. This is just me opening the toolbox. I only showed a few tools. There are multiple ways we can fight Usyk. The next one, again, is going to be a surprise."Despite the setback, the Dutch kickboxing legend is not interested in calling time on his career just yet and is still eager to take part in several high-profile boxing bouts. "I'm open to seeing what opportunities become available because I've been reached out to by the whole world. It's been crazy. Let's see what next steps make sense."I just want to make the biggest fights - big fights at crazy locations. We draw a bunch of viewers. They've seen what we're capable of, and they see I'm one of the top box-office stars. It's not up to me who I fight next. It's up to the organisation. Who do they want to see me against? I'll be ready to fight anybody - anybody."Article continues belowThe 37-year-old believed he had a commanding lead over Usyk before the stoppage. "There were open scorecards and after four rounds, they said we're even," he told the Ariel Helwani Show. "I was like, 'Hmm, ok.' I felt like it was at least three to one, but ok, we're even, that's fine. Then we got the scorecards again after another four rounds and still we were even. It started to feel fishy because I felt like I was winning these rounds. I was working more, I was getting hit less, so maybe I have to push it a little bit more."Asked how he had scored the fight after 10 rounds, Verhoeven added: “Somewhere 8-2. I look at certain rounds, and I’m like, ‘How did I lose that?’ He didn’t even touch me, maybe more than once or twice, and I hit him four, five, six times.”
