The United States issued a sharp warning to Russia during a United Nations Security Council session, urging Moscow to avoid what it described as plans for “systematic strikes” on Kyiv. Russia rejected the appeal and reiterated its position, including a warning for foreign diplomats to leave the Ukrainian capital, according to Reuters.
The meeting was convened at Ukraine’s request following a large-scale Russian assault on Kyiv and surrounding regions over the weekend. Ukrainian officials reported hundreds of drones and missiles were launched in the attack, which also included the use of an Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile. The weapon, which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads, has now been used by Russia multiple times since November 2024.
U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Tammy Bruce strongly condemned the strikes, describing the Oreshnik missile attack as an escalation with severe implications for civilians and regional stability. “Inexplicable, dangerous and barbaric escalation,” she said, referring to Russia’s use of the system during the latest bombardment.
Washington also cautioned Moscow against carrying out further so-called systematic strikes on Kyiv, warning that such actions would increase civilian casualties and further undermine any prospects for a negotiated settlement. “We warn Russia against so-called systematic strikes against Kiev, which risk further civilian casualties and set back prospects for peace,” Bruce said.
