Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has been told to pay A$650,000 (£346,310) in fines over failing to respond to respond to regulators about its measures for handling child abuse material, ending a dispute that began more than three years ago.
Australia’s eSafety commissioner first issued a notice to X in February 2023, when X was known as Twitter, asking it for a report on its compliance with basic online safety expectations around child sexual abuse material.
The regulator set a deadline of 29 March. The company provided a report at that time, but it was identified as containing significant gaps.
