Helen Mirren was accosted on a London street by a pro-Palestine stranger who called her an 'evil Zionist b***h' - a video captured the shocking confrontation in Tower Hill06:30, 29 May 2026Dame Helen Mirren was confronted on a London street by a pro-Palestine individual who hurled vile abuse at her, branding her an "evil Zionist b***h."The disturbing incident was filmed and initially shared by an anonymous account named Anti-Fascist Action U.K., capturing the 80 year old Dame being accosted while strolling through Tower Hill in East London alongside her husband, Taylor Hackford, 81, on Wednesday 27 May. Initially, Dame Helen responded courteously, greeting the man and enquiring after his wellbeing.Yet the seemingly innocent exchange rapidly deteriorated as the pro-Palestine individual launched into an aggressive rant targeting the Oscar-winning actress's stance on Israel. The individual declared: "And there is Helen Mirren the avowed Zionist. You said Israel should last forever because of the Holocaust. And she was very happy the Palestinians houses were gone. You are an evil Zionist b----. And you [Hackford] as well, f--- you as well."Tensions escalated further as Hackford forcefully instructed the man to "f--- off" and cease harassing them. While Dame Helen has no Jewish or Israeli heritage, she has consistently expressed solidarity with Israel, reports the Irish Star.Dame Helen's connection to Israel dates back to 1967, following the Six Day War, when she volunteered at Kibbutz HaOn beside the Sea of Galilee and travelled extensively throughout the nation. Since then, she has consistently championed Israel's right to exist and opposed cultural boycotts targeting the nation, maintaining that excluding Israeli artists would prove detrimental. "It is the artistic community that I believe will carry Israel forward," she said.Last month, she put her name to an open letter alongside fellow celebrities Amy Schumer, Mila Kunis, Sharon Osbourne and Boy George expressing backing for Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Mirren was also amongst 2,000 entertainment industry figures and celebrities who signed an open letter denouncing Hamas' atrocities committed on Oct. 7, 2023."This is terrorism. This is evil," the letter said. "There is no justification or rationalization for Hamas' actions. These are barbaric acts of terrorism that must be called out by everyone. Under the cover of thousands of rockets fired indiscriminately into civilian populations, Hamas murdered and kidnapped innocent men, women, and children."During a 2023 appearance on Israel's Channel 12 while promoting Golda, which chronicled Meir's leadership throughout the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Mirren declared her support for Israel, stating: "in the existence of Israel, and I believe Israel has to go forward into the future, for the rest of eternity... I believe in Israel because of the Holocaust," (per the Daily Mail).Throughout the discussion, Mirren disclosed that certain individuals had attempted to dissuade her from accepting the part due to Israel's contentious standing in contemporary international relations. Nevertheless, she stood by her choice to portray the historical figure, remarking: "I've met such extraordinary people in Israel."The acclaimed British actress continued: "I know there is a base, a foundation of deep intelligence, thoughtfulness, commitment, poetry even in Israel that is very, very special."Content cannot be displayed without consentThe London-headquartered Palestinian Solidarity Campaign spearheaded demands for a boycott of the production. Her casting as Meir prompted considerable controversy, primarily because she isn't Jewish and has formerly identified herself as a "Christian who doesn't believe in God."Article continues belowSpeaking to Radio Times in 2023, Mirren acknowledged having discussed the matter with the film's director, Guy Nattiv, during which she proposed withdrawing from the part should her religion become an "issue." She recalled: "But he said, 'No, it's not an issue. I want you to play Golda.' And off we went."While Mirren has voiced her backing for Israel, she has equally made clear her opposition to certain actions by the Israeli government and expressed worry about the nation's political trajectory.
