TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s singles shuttler Alwi Farhan upset top seed Shi Yu Qi of China 21-16, 19-21, 21-14 in the round of 16 of the 2026 Singapore Open at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Thursday.“I’m happy, of course, and proud to gain experience against the world number one. But the journey is not over yet, because there are still important rounds ahead. I need to stay focused,” Alwi said after the match, as quoted in an official PBSI statement on Thursday.Alwi said that after Indonesia failed to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 Thomas Cup, he continued to reflect on his performances and became more determined to prove himself. The 21-year-old also said he is gradually learning to overcome fear and anxiety on court.“I believe God always has a better plan for me, so I have to accept everything with maturity. This has been a very difficult journey, but I must enjoy it in any condition,” he said.Alwi added that he has learned from experience not to rush points in his eagerness to win, which previously led to unforced errors. Against Shi Yu Qi, he showed better control in managing his rhythm.“Several times I’ve learned that when I want to win too much, I make mistakes. After losing the second game, I tried to stay calm and refocus, because I knew the match wasn’t over and we still had equal chances to win,” he said. The 2025 Macau Open champion will next face Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the quarterfinals on Friday (29 May).Read: Jonatan Christie Knocked Out of Singapore Open
