The Premier League season is over, and while many players will be focused on upcoming trips to the U.S., Canada, and Mexico with their national teams, the transfer market is also whirring into action. The news that Anthony Gordon is set to join Barcelona from Newcastle United is the window’s first headline of many to come. Some Premier League stars in the lower-to-middle tiers of the table are being eyed up by Champions League sides. On the other side of the coin, there are players who could benefit from joining a club where they will have less competition for game time. There are also several high-profile names who are out of contract and will be available as free agents. The games are only just beginning, and The Athletic will have extensive coverage of the transfer window as it unfolds. But to ease you in, here is a reminder of some of the Premier League players who could be searching for a move this summer.Mateus FernandesAfter standing out for two consecutive seasons in relegated sides, 21-year-old Fernandes has surely proven he is ready to compete for a place in a side scrapping for greater rewards than just survival. The midfielder could not save Southampton or West Ham United from dropping into the Championship, but his energy in the middle of the park has impressed and earned him a first senior call-up for Portugal in March. As The Athletic have reported, West Ham are expecting to sell Fernandes and want to make a significant profit on the £38m deal they negotiated last summer. Paris Saint-Germain are interested, while Manchester United are also tracking the player as they look to replace the departing Casemiro.Fernandes and West Ham have been relegated (Richard Pelham/Getty Images)Elliot AndersonAnderson was in no rush to leave the pitch when he was substituted off in Nottingham Forest’s final game of the season on Sunday, as the whole City Ground rose to applaud him and he returned the favour. It was the behaviour of a fanbase that knew they might be seeing him in their kit for the last time. The 23-year-old’s formidable rise at Forest, acting as the team’s creative and defensive axis, has seen him picked for Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad and attracted the interest of Champions League sides. Manchester City are considered frontrunners for his signature, with Manchester United also interested — and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expected to drive a very hard bargain of more than £100m.Adam WhartonWharton’s omission from the England squad shocked many, considering his superb technical ability on the ball and particularly his outstanding passing vision. At the most rudimentary level, Wharton’s output in terms of goals and assists mean his numbers are not the most impressive — he scored his first goal for Crystal Palace on May 17 — but you do not have to watch for long to see how much he adds creatively. With Wharton under contract at Palace until summer 2029, there is no rush to sell him, and the promise of Europa League football after The Eagles’ Conference League victory might help them hold on to him — but a sale would enable them to reinvest heavily in the squad. Without international duty, Wharton has plenty of time to consider his options, and clarity over who will be head coach after Oliver Glasner’s departure could play a part in his decision.
