A documentary on former prime minister Dame Jacinda Ardern has won a top prize at the news and documentary Emmy Awards.

The film, Prime Minister, followed the rise of Ardern through the Labour Party, her time in office and her role as prime minister during the Christchurch terror attack, the Whakaari White Island volcanic eruption and the Covid-19 pandemic.

It also followed her pregnancy and her becoming only the second leader in history to give birth while in office, as well as her private life, captured on home videos by her husband Clarke Gayford.

Prime Minister also won the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary category.

The documentary was co-directed by Auckland-based filmmaker Michelle Walshe and American Lindsay Utz. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews.
