US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent confirmed his department is prepared to design a $US250 ($350) note featuring President Donald Trump. Federal laws currently prevent the printing of a living US person on currency but Mr Bessent said "we have to be prepared" as Republicans introduce legislation in Congress that would make an exception. Mr Bessent denied the Trump administration is behind the push, and insisted there was nothing inappropriate about it. "There is proposed legislation in front of the House and in front of the Senate so that a living person, Donald J Trump, could be on a $250 bill. It's all up on Capitol Hill," he said."But we will stick to the law."This is the latest display of Mr Trump's penchant for infusing his name and likeness into the nation's capital and its 250th anniversary of the declaration of independence. The bill would allow for current and future presidents to be featured. In a press briefing, Mr Bessent said the law is designed for one person: "Donald J Trump." The legislation is currently languishing in Congress and will need approval from the US House and Senate. Action on the legislation has been slow since its introduction. An 1866 law called the Thayer Amendment prohibits the use of a living person on the bonds, securities, notes or postal currency of the United States.Democratic Leader of the House Hakeem Jeffries told Mr Trump to "get over yourself" on X in response to the proposal. "The upcoming July 4th anniversary is not about a wannabe king," he wrote. "It's about celebrating the American journey."Allies behind the push Reports have shown that US Treasurer Brandon Beach, an appointee of Mr Trump, has been pushing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to expedite the process for a new note. Mr Beach provided a design to the department at the end of last year, according to the Washington Post. But in the press briefing, Mr Bessent held up the report and told Washington Post reporters in the room it was "terribly written and terribly edited".He also defended the move to another reporter, who suggested it was insensitive to push for new currency when Americans were struggling to afford everyday essentials. There was "nothing untoward" about putting a president's face on a note celebrating the 250th anniversary, he said. Former BEP chief Patricia Solimene was reassigned after pushing back against the decision, according to the Washington Post report. A Treasury spokesperson declined to comment on Solimene's current role but confirmed that Michael Brown, a top aide for Mr Beach, became acting director of BEP on May 18.What other things has Donald Trump put his name and likeness on?A new note would be the latest example of Mr Trump expanding his personal brand in his role as US president.
