SANTA CLARA, Calif. — There’s one advantage to having multiple ACL injuries in your career, Nick Bosa said Thursday: He now knows that rushing his rehabilitation isn’t necessary. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end said that after tearing his left ACL in 2020, he tried to push every recovery milestone as hard as he could.“And I probably dealt with some stuff that I didn’t need to deal with in terms of bumps in the road of recovery,” he said. His current recovery, from a torn right ACL suffered in September, has been more methodical. That’s partly because it’s the second time he’s damaged the right ACL, having done so as a high schooler in Florida. That meant his patellar tendon needed more time to adapt, which was different than his previous two rehabilitations. The other factor is that he’s simply older — he turns 29 in October — more established in the league and doesn’t feel the same impetus to rush back like he did in 2020.Still, Bosa said he’s “pretty far along” in the recovery and is back to moving around on a side field during the 49ers’ organized team activities. He said he plans to return to practice early in training camp and be ready for the team’s Week 1 game in Australia on Sept. 10, which would be 11 days shy of one year since the injury.“All the rest of my body feels pretty darn good,” he said. “My fingers haven’t felt this good in probably 20 years.”Bosa and coach Kyle Shanahan were also asked about the prospect of adding free-agent pass rusher Joey Bosa to the roster. Shanahan said his kids have been asking the same question, but there hasn’t been much internal discussion about adding a second Bosa.“We have our team, and anyone else that we can figure out to bring, especially someone like that, that’d be awesome,” he said. “But that stuff’s not always possible.”Meanwhile, Nick said his older brother doesn’t appear to be champing at the bit to join the 49ers, or any team, this spring.“I think he’s working on his golf right now,” he said. “I don’t think he’s thinking too much about football.”Odds and ends• The 49ers will be without running back Isaac Guerendo for an extended period after he tore a pectoral muscle while lifting weights last month. Shanahan said it’s not a season-ending injury, although it’s likely the third-year runner will be out through training camp.Starting running back Christian McCaffrey, meanwhile, is taking part in the OTA practices, though he had a day off on Thursday. The team’s tailbacks were led by Jordan James and rookie Kaelon Black. The 49ers also signed a pair of veteran runners, Jermar Jefferson and Jordan Mims, and waived running back Sincere McCormick.• Receiver Mike Evans has been on hand for the offseason program but was back in his native Texas on Thursday to handle a personal matter. He was among a large group of players, most of them established veterans, who did not take part in the voluntary practice, including: George Kittle (Achilles), Demarcus Robinson, Junior Bergen, Khalil Dinkins, Mykel Williams (ACL), Alfred Collins (shoulder), Keion White (foot), Evan Anderson, Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Tatum Bethune and Luke Gifford. The team also placed veteran safety Darrick Forrest on injured reserve.Quarterback Mac Jones was dealing with some shoulder soreness and didn’t throw during team periods Thursday. The quarterbacks were Brock Purdy, Adrian Martinez and Kurtis Rourke. The only 49er who hasn’t been on hand this spring is left tackle Trent Williams. The 15-year veteran is expected in next week, Shanahan said. With Williams absent, Vederian Lowe stepped in at left tackle.• The standout in Thursday’s practice? It might have been third-year receiver Jacob Cowing, who caught four passes in 11-on-11 situations, including one on a perfectly thrown long ball from Rourke in which he came open on a post route. The 49ers were excited about Cowing a year ago at this time after he worked with Purdy and Ricky Pearsall in the early offseason. Cowing, however, then strained a hamstring on the first day of training camp and exacerbated the injury several times throughout the season. Another young receiver, Jordan Watkins, looked good last year before suffering a high-ankle sprain in the preseason opener and falling to the bottom of the depth chart as a result.“I was really excited how Jordan and Jake came back,” Shanahan said. “You could tell they came back — it wasn’t just (returning) healthy. You could tell they’ve been putting work in and coming in here in shape and stuff has allowed them to get farther ahead in these five weeks than just coming here to get in shape. They’ve come here to play and work.”• Other standouts Thursday included third-round rookie edge rusher Romello Height, who looked especially fluid rounding the corner in pass-rush drills, and new defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa. With Bosa out of action, Odighizuwa, 27, has taken charge of an otherwise young defensive line. He was the first defensive lineman to go through individual drills.“He’s been one of the best leaders on the team so far,” Shanahan said. “Just how he works, how thorough he is on everything and what he does on his own. Bringing guys along with him. Everyone from Dallas told us this, and it’s been that way. He’s been a stud.”• Offensive tackle Colton McKivitz said he likes what he’s seeing from second-year guard Connor Colby, who played 452 snaps last season and is among the contenders to start at left guard this year. Colby, veteran Robert Jones and fourth-round rookie Carver Willis lined up at left guard at various points in the practice. Willis also took some snaps on the right side.• The 49ers were light at linebacker with Warner, Greenlaw, Bethune and Gifford not practicing. Garret Wallow and Jalen Graham took turns filling in for Warner at middle linebacker while second-year player Nick Martin manned the weakside spot. Martin missed the last two months of the 2025 season with a concussion but had no limitations Thursday.Shanahan said the top two linebacker spots will go to Warner and Greenlaw.“I think we’ve got two guys who are established as starters, and I think we’ve got a big-time competition for our three, four, five and six (spots),” he said.• With 2025 punt returner Skyy Moore now with the Green Bay Packers, there’s an open competition for the position. Among those fielding punts Thursday were Cowing, Watkins, Christian Kirk, Pearsall, Nate Hobbs and Wesley Grimes.• Corliss Waitman was the only punter on hand in practice. The team has not yet signed rookie Jake Bouwmeester, an Australia native who played at Texas.• Shanahan said the 49ers are eying joint practices with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers this summer ahead of preseason games against both teams. The 49ers will host the Titans on Aug. 13 and will visit the Chargers the following week.He also said the 49ers plan to practice in Colorado Springs ahead of their Nov. 22 game in Mexico City against the Minnesota Vikings. The team likely will travel to Colorado immediately after the Nov. 15 game in Dallas, he said.
