May 29, 2026 — 10:31amTraffic was backed up and buses diverted away from Brisbane’s CBD as a naval parade made its way down Adelaide Street on Friday morning, before a ceremony outside City Hall.HMAS Brisbane is visiting its namesake city this weekend, with members of the public invited on board for an Australian Navy open day on Sunday.Friday’s ceremony in King George Square – called a Freedom of Entry – included a short parade down Adelaide Street to City Hall, which closed Adelaide Street and pushed buses on to Ann Street.The parade caused traffic jams around the city.Julius DennisThe parade had the knock-on effect of slowing traffic around the CBD, with vehicles queuing up along Turbot Street between 9 and 10am.At City Hall, naval officers participated in a traditional challenge with the police service, where the Navy was stopped by a senior police officer before entering the city.The Navy described the tradition as “one of the oldest and most honoured customs in military history, symbolising mutual trust and respect between a military unit and the community it serves”.Officers marched to King George Square on friday morning.Neesha SinnyaHMAS Brisbane carries almost 200 sailors, and is designed to provide air defence for other ships and land forces.The halls and corridors of the ship are named after Brisbane streets.Members of the public will be able to visit HMAS Brisbane at its dock at Fisherman’s Wharf on Sunday, where there will be a sausage sizzle and other family events on board.Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
