Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Capt. Brijesh Chowta on Thursday, said the district administration has taken his letter regarding the need for change and expansion of some important city bus routes in Mangaluru city seriously. In a statement, he said the Additional Deputy Commissioner has written a letter to senior officials of the Transport Department requesting them to urgently present the issue at the upcoming Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting and take an appropriate decision. With this, the proposal given by the MP to upgrade the public transport system to complement the geographical and population growth of Mangaluru city and to facilitate the daily movement of passengers has now received the support of the district administration. Although the city boundaries are expanding day by day, public buses are still plying on old and shorter routes, he said.Capt. Chowta had highlighted the current transport situation in Mangaluru city, saying many services are not able to meet the increasing transport needs of the public. Such old routes are also causing financial losses to the bus operators, and the MP had made it clear that expanding these routes in line with the changing population is the only logical way to facilitate the public and run the transport system profitably. The MP had recommended the extension of three major bus routes. Route No. 5, State Bank-Morgan’s Gate to to Jeppinamogaru; Rote No. 7, State Bank- Urva Store to Baikampady Industrial Area for the benefit of industrial workers and Route No. 13, State Bank - Urva Store to Panambur Beach for the benefit of tourists. The district administration has instructed the transport department to examine the feasibility of the proposals and present recommendations in the next meeting.
