Madurai-based Human Rights Organisation People’s Watch on Thursday demanded Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker to inquire into the resignations submitted by the four MLAs from the AIADMK.People’s Watch, the programme unit of Centre for Promotion of Social Concerns (CPSC), said as a civil society organisation, it was deeply concerned about how the will of the people had been taken for a ride by the four MLAs, resigning and immediately joining TVK, the ruling party. In a press release, the Executive Trustee of CPSC R. Sathiamoorthy said shockingly within just two weeks four elected Members of the Legislative Assembly have resigned without assigning any genuine or convincing reasons. It appears that the resignations were politically motivated and intended to indirectly support the present government for personal or political gains, he said, demanding the Speaker to undertake a proper inquiry into the resignation. He said the situation raised a serious constitutional and democratic concern. During the Assembly election, lakhs of voters exercised their franchise with responsibility. Many citizens even travelled from abroad to cast their vote considering it their democratic duty. However, the elected representatives have casually abandoned the mandate entrusted to them by the people.Mr. Sathiamoorthy said though an MLA has a constitutional right to resign, the Speaker must satisfy himself that the resignation was voluntary and genuine. A resignation submitted within two weeks of an election without any compelling reason was inherently suspect. Strict inquiry should be conducted to determine if these resignations were genuine or if they were a fraudulent abuse of the constitutional process to orchestrate artificial bye-elections.Constitutional functionaries are expected to act in accordance with constitutional morality, democratic ethics, and political accountability. Conducting elections and bye-elections involves substantial expenditure from the public exchequer. Sudden resignations without compelling reasons deprives citizens of effective representation, he said. Published - May 28, 2026 08:27 pm IST
