Qualcomm has been making a play for the premium laptop space in recent years. The Snapdragon X2 line of chips are energy-efficient processors that score closer in CPU benchmarks to Apple’s latest M series processors than any recent Intel or AMD mobile processors. But laptops with these chips aren’t exactly cheap. So earlier this year, Qualcomm introduce the X2 Plus for lower-cost laptops. And now the company is going even cheaper with a new Snapdragon C Platform designed for really cheap laptops. How cheap? Like as low as $300.That’s means an entry-level laptop with a Snapdragon C series chip could be half the price of an Apple MacBook Neo. But notably, Qualcomm is also taking a page out of Apple’s playbook in order to offer these cheaper chips.Instead of featuring the Oyron CPU cores found in the company’s highest-performance laptop and smartphone chips, Snapdragon C processors use older Kryo CPU cores designed for laptops and older Windows on ARM PCs.In other words, these chips aren’t going to offer blazing-fast performance, but Qualcomm says they will be good enough for “power efficient every day computing experiences” with all-day battery life and “cool, quiet designs.”They’re not made for gaming, video editing, or running local LLMs. Instead they’re made for simpler tasks like “web browsing, video streaming, productivity, and video calls.”Qualcomm hasn’t provided detailed specifications for the new processors yet, but the chip maker says the first Snapdragon C-powered devices should be available later this year, including models from Acer, HP, and Lenovo.Acer Aspire 15 Go (AG15-Q31P)One model that’s already been announced is the Acer Aspire Go 15 (AG15-Q31P) which pairs Qualcomm’s new processor wit a 15.6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a 53 Wh battery, support for WiFi 6E, and up to 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.Of course, another thing to keep in mind is that while Qualcomm is targeting a $300 starting price, there’s no guarantee that PC makers will actually release anything quite that cheap… particularly if RAM and storage prices continue to climb.
