Jannik Sinner’s bid for a maiden French Open title and career grand slam went up in smoke as he wilted in his second-round match against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo and fell to a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 defeat on a scorching Thursday.Sinner won the opening two sets with ease 6-3, 6-2 and was up 5-1 in the third set before dropping three games and asking for medical treatment off the court, only to lose two straight sets before going down in the decider.The top-ranked Sinner was struggling with the heat against 56th-ranked Argentinian opponent when serving for the match at 5-4, 0-40 in the third set. The Italian bent over on the court and then walked to his chair. He asked for assistance and left the court. Sinner left the court again.“It’s tough for him,” Cerúndolo said of Sinner. “I couldn’t win more than three games in a set, so I was a little bit lucky. He deserved to win this match, and then I don’t know what happened. But I feel sorry for him and hope he recovers.”The temperature at the start of the match was 29 degrees C (84 F), and was forecast to rise to 33 C (91 F). Sinner was on a 30-match winning streak stretching back to February. He also struggled in the heat at the Australian Open against Eliot Spizzirri in January.
