Left-wing former prime minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday formally registered his new Greek Left Alliance, or ELAS, party with the Supreme Court, voicing optimism that his political comeback after three years would prove “useful” to the country.
Tsipras, 51, said that his new party’s main precepts were “democracy and justice, because without justice democracy degenerates and justice cannot function without a strong democracy.”
The former leader of the left-wing SYRIZA party visited the Supreme Court, accompanied by retired judge Maria Lepenioti – who presided over the trial of the Nazi-inspired Golden Dawn party – and his new communications team.
Amid other requirements for the formation of a new political party, its founding principles, signed by at least 200 Greek citizens who have the right to vote, must be tabled with the court.
Tsipras, who governed from 2015-2019 in coalition with a small right-wing party,, told reporters he hoped “to manage to bring something better to this country.”
