At least three people drowned after a country boat carrying 14 passengers capsized in the Ganga in Patna district on Thursday (May 28, 2026).Patna District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S. M. said State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed and seven people have been rescued so far even as four are missing.According to the DM’s office, 14 residents of Bind Toli, located near Umanath Ghat in the Barh subdivision of Patna district, boarded the boat at 5.45 a.m. to reach Sultanpur Diyara in the Mohiuddinnagar area of Samastipur district. Residents frequently sail to the location to harvest pointed gourds and engage in agricultural work.“During the return journey, the boat capsized near Sultanpur Diyara (Samastipur) due to strong winds. Relief and rescue teams have successfully rescued seven individuals, while the bodies of three persons have been recovered. A search operation is currently underway for the remaining four people. The district administrations of Samastipur and Patna are coordinating closely to conduct the rescue operation,” Mr. Thiyagarajan told journalists.According to the eyewitnesses, locals present near the ghat jumped into the river to save the people in the boat as SDRF and NDRF teams took time to reach the spot. The deceased have been identified as Shravan Mahto, 36, Neelam Kumari, 30, and Kashi Kumar, 15. All were residents of Masumganj Bind Tola village within the Barh police station area.The disaster management teams operated in the presence of the Sub-Divisional Officer and the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Barh.
