Police were called and people were evacuated from their homes in an emergency incident which has shut a south London street for around 12 hours. Emergency services have been in attendance on Stanstead Road, Catford, since around 11.30pm on Wednesday, according to a local resident. The road has been cordoned off from Cranston Road to the Blythe Hill Tavern pub, and an inner-cordon established, they said. Photographs show armed police officers at the scene. The nature of the incident is not yet known. An eye-witness told The Independent that residents living within the inner-cordon on Stanstead Road were evacuated from their homes shortly after officers were called to the scene.A resident said: “They just evacuated and they just started every door, every house.”“Everybody was evacuated. We were all just out on the street.”Those evacuated from the flats have been taken to the nearby Ladywell Centre but have been out of their homes for 11 hours, he said.The Metropolitan Police has been contacted for comment.
